Vukukhanye’s Bursary Project, which began in 2008 to help disadvantaged children from the community of Chesterville to achieve tertiary qualifications, continues to succeed. Silindile Nyerende, a youth from Chesterville recently graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).
Nyerende, graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science Degree and will be spending 2018 attaining her Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). “I am grateful to my benefactors who have made it possible for me to reach my goals, but this is only one part of my journey” says Nyerende, “ the next step is to get my post graduate certificate so that I can teach geography,” says Nyerende.
Started by Vukukhanye and funded by SUNCOAST, Durban’s premier entertainment destination, the Bursary Project is currently supporting 2 senior primary school pupils, 6 high school pupils and 9 students in various Universities and Colleges in Durban. The students are assisted with fees and education related expenses until their graduation from university or college.
“We’ve enjoyed phenomenal success in the last few years, with many of our university and college students graduating and finding jobs” says Chief Executive Officer of Vukukhanye, Dr. Anthony van der Muelen. “Our high school and primary school pupils are also doing us proud, some passing with flying colours, which bodes well for their futures and will help them immensely in getting into their desired fields of study”.
Speaking on SUNCOAST’s contribution to the bursary project, Executive Director of SUNCOAST, Mike Dowsley comments; “Education unlocks many doors and opportunities for individuals to better themselves and those around them. Our organisation is outcome driven and it is rewarding to see the direct results of our contribution to this amazing project. We congratulate Silindile on her graduation and we look forward to seeing big things from her in the future”.
