On the 28th and 29th March 2015, mountain bike enthusiasts will be able to take part in the inaugural Marriott Freedom Race, an exciting new mountain bike event that celebrates the 25th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.
The Marriott Freedom Race, sponsored by Marriot Income Specialists accommodates both serious cyclists and families looking for a fun day out. Riders can choose between a two-day, two-person team ride which covers +/-60kms per day (120km in total), or a one-day individual ride over a shorter course of 30kms.
Day one starts at the Umhlali Country Club and winds its way through the scenic rolling hills of the north coast, heading southwards into Umhlanga, finishing at Umhlanga College. Day two starts at the College and heads inland towards the mountains. Riders will have the chance to try out new and old tracks, making for an unforgettable and unique experience! Ride alongside the Umgeni River and Durban’s famed Promenade and cross the finish line at the Suncoast sundeck. Here, riders can spend the afternoon relaxing with family and friends, enjoy the entertainment and attend the prize giving which takes place at 13h00. Refreshments will be available to purchase and Team entrants can get a well-deserved leg massage.
Registration and the race and rider briefing will take place at the Freedom Race Expo; held at SUNCOAST from 10h00 to 17h00 on Friday 27 March 2015. Further details regarding starting times are available on the Marriot Freedom Race website at www.freedomrace.co.za.
The Marriott Freedom Race is also proudly supported by SUNCOAST, B-Active Sports, 32Gi and the Durban Green Corridor.
A portion of the entry fees will be donated to Durban Green Corridor Youth MTB programme, which aims to develop and involve the youth in environmental and economic programmes – activities which are often not available at their schools.
Once the children come together, enjoyable outdoor activities are linked with ecological understanding and an appreciation of clean nature. Mountain Biking and Trail Running are the most developed youth programmes so far as well as the DGC Environmental Club.
