Sunday Beats

Suncoast is making sure you #FEELTHEBEAT of the city of Durban!

The ever-growing music scene in Durban has upped the vibe with a dedicated platform for musicians to entertain the public.

The Sunday Beats series hosted by Suncoast, Durban’s premiere entertainment destination has become so popular with audiences and musicians alike that it is now a regular weekly gig.

“SUNCOAST is committed to promoting local music and by making this a regular weekly occurrence we have increased the opportunities for local talent,” To showcase their talent says SUNCOAST Marketing Manager, Louise Howell,“as well as ensuring our guests are getting great entertainment, it’s the perfect way to end your weekend and it’s free!”

A variety of the best of Durban and South African musical talent – some already established, others up-and-coming, entertain audiences in SUNCOAST’s Amphitheatre every Sunday at 2pm with fun, interactive, live music sessions.

“The backdrop of the Indian Ocean, beachfront skyline and the Art Deco architectural influences of the complex enhances the live-music experience of Sunday Beats,” Howell adds. “The Amphitheatre on the Golden Mile – also known as the Durban Promenade, has to be one of the most vibrant stages in the city.”

Howell believes the Sunday Beats performer-mix is unique.
“Previous artists and those in future line-ups bring their own distinctive flavour, style and interpretation of Durban. The liveliness and vibrancy of the promenade provides an added audience of walkers, joggers, tourists, cyclists and onlookers who take time out to listen to the various performers.”

The June programme of Sunday Beats features a unique mixture of jazz, soul, R&B, pop and funk:

  • Sunday, 04 June – Backline
  • Sunday, 11 June – The Kickstands
  • Sunday, 18 June – Zethe Mdletshe
  • Sunday, 25 June – Afritude

Kicking off the month is Backline, a four-piece band pumping out pop, funk and a number of other genres. The group has been together since 2001 and features band members Pravin Giandhari (drums/vocals), Tyrell Subramoney (bass/vocals), Don John (guitar) and Kauren Pillay (keyboard).

Next to bring their unique sound to the Sunday Beats stage is the popular acoustic duo of Gary Nixon and Rudi Greyvenstein also known as The Kickstands. The established band from Scottburgh has played at various music festivals and venues such as The White Mountain Festival, Splashy Fen and more.

Lovers of soul and R&B will be in for a treat when singer-songwriter, Zethe Mdletshe – affectionately known as Zethe, makes a return to the Sunday Beats stage. SUNCOAST audiences last enjoyed Zethe’s performance on Valentine’s Day. The young songstress has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame within the Durban jazz scene thanks to her soulfully-rich voice. Her influences include the likes of South African and international jazz greats such as Nina Simone, Dianne Reeves, Amy Winehouse, Miriam Makeba and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

Bringing June’s line-up to a close is one of Durban’s most popular cover bands –Afritude. The four-piece band has a wide repertoire ranging from local and international hits of the 60’s to the present-day. Band members Derrick Jacob (bass), Sylvester Dunn (vocals), Sydney Naidoo (guitar) and John Court (vocals) are bound to have the audience wanting more with their infectious sounds and performance.
“Make a date every Sunday to #FeelTheBeat with our June line-up,” says Howell.
