George Mari Band to perform at Suncoast’s Sunday Beats!
The musical influences of jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Robbie Williams and many more will be felt on the Durban Promenade when the George Mari Band step on the Sunday Beats stage at SUNCOAST on Sunday, 21 May from 2pm.
Lead by trumpet player, pianist, composer and educator, George Mari, who has enjoyed much local and international collaboration as a jazz trumpeter, the band will be looking to entertain many a crowd with their original music and fine selection of American and South African Jazz.
“You know, the lovely thing about jazz music today is that it comes in all different sounds and collaborations and recently within Durban it has taken resurgence and is close to coming back into the mainstream. We hope to garner more followers of jazz when we perform at SUNCOAST, so if you love jazz or have never been a fan, come through, we will help you see the joy of jazz” says George Mari.
Currently a part-time lecturer in the Jazz Studies programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), School of Arts (Music), George also has three albums under his belt having released Syringa Avenue (2006); My Mecca (2008) and Charade (2010) with the first two albums being collections of his original compositions.
George has a BMus in Jazz Performance and an MMus in Jazz Composition and Arranging from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He has vast teaching experience which includes working in various high schools as a Jazz band Director, community Music projects such UKUSA – the longest-running music project in KwaZulu-Natal, where he taught Music Theory and Trumpet at various levels and currently at the University of KwaZulu-Natal where he teaches Jazz trumpet and Ensemble. In 2014 George was commissioned to write a composition for the VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University)/UKZN Exchange which was performed both in the USA and SA this year.
