Suncoast Staff Awards

Focusing on Staff Recognition

In today’s fast-paced and continually changing work environment, many global and local organisations realise that employee recognition is an important facet of running any business.

Durban’s Suncoast Casino, Hotels and Entertainment is a corporate entity who realises and demonstrated this when recently hosting its Staff Awards function at the SUNCOAST Conference Centre. A number of staff members were recognised for their continuous and tireless work that they put into the organisation.

“Peer-to-peer recognition is something that TSOGO SUN and SUNCOAST (as a property of TSOGO SUN) live and breathe on a daily basis,” says SUNCOAST Human Resources Manager, Deshnee Naidu.“‘Ownership’ is the last acronym of the TSOGO name and we constantly encourage managers and staff to recognise and congratulate individuals who show this value.”

Research done by Bersin & Associates titled The State of Employee Recognition shows organisations with recognition programmes, which are highly effective at enabling employee engagement, had 31% lower voluntary turnover than organisations with ineffective recognition programmes. A report by Globoforce, titled The Business Impact of Employee Recognition, found that 41% of companies that use peer-to-peer recognition have seen marked positive increases in customer satisfaction.

Awards and certificates given to SUNCOAST staff included recognition for long-service (10 years at SUNCOAST), completion of NQF 3,4 and 5 Generic Management Courses as well as the successful completion of the Management Skills Builder (MSB) Course.

The tables were turned at refreshment time (after the ‘Mad-Hatter’-themed award ceremony) when SUNCOAST Management showed their appreciation for their department staff by taking food orders and serving drinks and food platters.

“Management would not be able to function optimally without the selfless work put in by each department on a daily basis,” says Naidu.

“SUNCOAST had positive growth last year”, said SUNCOAST Executive Director, Mike Dowsley, at the award ceremony. “This is thanks to you – the staff – who come in and make a positive change to this business each and every day.”

Strini Rajagopaul – TSOGO SUN’s Training and Development Manager for the TSOGO SUN Academy – also attended the function and spoke on the challenges and changes that the Academy will be rolling out over the next year.

“The TSOGO SUN Academy facilitates and enrols the training of staff within the Group,” Rajagopaul says. “Previously, candidates were spoon fed information. Going forward, changes will be made within the academy to ensure a continual learning process. Candidates will be guided to select the best avenue of learning suited to their field as and when they wish to pursue that option.”

One of the top award winners was Basil Simons, Employee Services Co-ordinator at SUNCOAST, who was presented with a long-service award, as well as a certificate for successfully completing the MSB course.

Reflecting on his decade of service at SUNCOAST, Simons attributes his job satisfaction to his colleagues and management. “We are acknowledged and recognised for what we do and because of that I plan to be here for another 10 even 20 years!”
