The 2014 edition of The Sandy Beach Run/Walk Presented by Thule, was stage on Sunday between Umhlanga and Durban and attracted just over 1 500 runners and walkers from across KZN.
The event is a 14km route along Durban’s golden beaches from Umhlanga to the Suncoast Sundeck staged at Spring Low Tide, and attracted all shapes, sizes, colors and dress ups in a year that encouraged runners to don the colors of the “Reggae Theme”, including a specially constructed floating bridge over the Umgeni River at Blue Lagoon.
“We are extremely happy with how the event has unfolded” explained Stu Berry of Impi Sport, organisers of The Sandy. “We really do feel that this event encompasses everything that Durban has to offer as a city, from the beach to Blue Lagoon and entertainment on the Suncoast Sundeck.”
It wasn’t all fun and games though, with the top athletes giving the 14km distance everything they had. The overall winning time went to Nkosikhona Mhlakwana in a time of 51min30sec, while the winning lady who crossed the line the day after Woman’s Day was Ruth Heynes in a time of 1hr06min13sec.
“This event has every potential to become one of Durban and KZN’s biggest attraction events. Running 14km along this stretch of beach that so many of us who live in Durban hardly ever experience is a great privilege, and today encompassed everything that we love about this City” explained Emma Lockhart, first time participant in The Sandy.
