Making Career Choices Easier

The more things change, the more they stay the same!

The 21st century has seen massive advancements in technology, daily acceleration in the digital landscape and the functionality of applications in social media – yet career-seekers still face the same dilemmas as previous generations when looking to the future.

“Making the right career choice in today’s world can be just as confusing now as in previous generations,” says Tracy Borland, Recruitment Consultant at Suncoast Casino, Hotels & Entertainment. “In fact it may be more so given that the scope of vocations to choose from is now broader than ever.”

Digital jobs such as cyber forensic analysts, growth hackers, social media influencers, application designers or developers – the list is endless and the job descriptions seem exciting to today’s youth. With subject selections to be made midway through high school and applications to be submitted to tertiary institutes, how does one know whether the career choice is the right one?

Borland suggests planning career choices around one’s interests. “The saying, ‘Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life,’ is so true.

“Bear in mind the digital landscape is making it even harder to find the right career, with new jobs and opportunities opening up each and every day,” Borland adds. “Statistics also show that the average person changes jobs 10 to 15 times in a lifetime. That’s an average of 12 job changes in one’s full career and that statistic is expected to grow according to the trends of Generations Y and Z.”

As a recruitment consultant at SUNCOAST, Borland is responsible for attracting and matching job applicants to the right position – in a company with over 1000 staff members. “It’s always wonderful to meet young and ambitious individuals who are eager to establish themselves within their respective careers whether it is within sales, marketing, IT or engineering.”

SUNCOAST’s Tracy Borland shares the following tips on how to make the right career choice:

  1. Know your strengths, values, personality and skills:
    • Ensure that the career you want to pursue plays to your strengths, values, personality and skills. If you don’t like working with people, a field such as Human Resources will not be fun for you, leaving you disappointed.
  2. Make a list of careers you like:
    • Drawing up a list will help in choosing the right career and job satisfaction.
  3. Set career goals:
    • Determining career objectives makes it easier to find and advance in the right job.

“Career options in the gaming industry are endless and varied and include anything from working with people, to number-crunchers, security, the on-hand gaming division itself – technical or on the casino floor, marketing, sales or in the hospitality fields (hotel, restaurant or entertainment divisions). Identify the area that suits your strengths and interest, establish what studying and/or training needs to be done and go for it!”
