Suncoast Provides An Enabling Environment For Employees
People with disabilities can demonstrate their ability and contribute equally alongside fellow workers if enterprises give them a fair opportunity; this is according to the draft Code of Practice on Key Aspects of Disability in the Workplace published by the Department of Labour (2007).
Yielding to Government’s declaration, Suncoast Casino, Hotels & Entertainment (SUNCOAST), as a fully compliant equal opportunity employer, is proving that with the right assistance, employees from every walk of life can thrive in the workplace.
Tracy Borland, Recruitment Manager at SUNCOAST said, “The SUNCOAST culture is designed to empower and develop employees, regardless of race, gender or disability and create an environment in which each employee can perform and grow to his or her fullest potential.”
Shongani Sikhakhane (27) a Cash Desk operator at SUNCOAST is proving that she is actually extra ordinarily abled. After being bitten by a snake at the age of 12, Shongani had to have a knee high amputation on her right leg.
“I was on my crutches when I got the job offer but I had faith that I could do it,” explained Shongani. “I was really grateful for the opportunity and all the support I received from SUNCOAST motivated me to work harder.”
Deshnee Naidu, the Human Resource Manager at SUNCOAST said, “We ensure that our workforce reflects our focused employment equity philosophy and SUNCOAST is committed to the wellness of all employees.”
Commenting on what aspects make SUNCOAST a desirable employer, “We develop our team by providing the training and development that is essential to retaining our talented workforce and Shongani was just the perfect candidate that we are so proud of,” commented Naidu.
Shongani is a mother to a four year old daughter and is currently studying towards a Human Resource Management qualification. Since starting her job with SUNCOAST less than a year ago, Shongani has inspired many people and was recently gifted with a brand new prosthetic leg worth R 110 000 from an anonymous ‘good Samaritan’.
“I’m now using a new state-of-the-art prosthetic leg and it’s made my work so much easier, I’m grateful everyday to have a job and be surrounded by such wonderful people,” said Shongani.
SUNCOAST firmly believes in providing continuous development programmes, entrepreneurship and self development opportunities for employees. In addition, the onsite employee clinic and canteen provide an enabling environment.
