Celebrating an African Superhero at Suncoast
Durban’s premier entertainment destination, SUNCOAST, hosted 100 children for a special viewing of Black Panther at the Suncoast Cinecentre on Thursday the 12th July, as part of their support of Mandela Day and the centenary celebrations.
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) arranged for children from the Lihle iThemba teenagers support group at Ithembalabantu Clinic in Umlazi, as well as youth from the Mariann Coordinating Committee (MCC) to attend this event.
Young people were a priority for Nelson Mandela and they are a priority for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation who work on the front lines of the HIV epidemic. AHF is acutely aware of the tremendous obstacles faced by South African youth, burdened with high unemployment, high HIV infection rates, gender-based violence and poverty.
“This partnership with Suncoast allows us to reflect on Mr Mandela‘s legacy of hope and give these girls and boys an opportunity to dream and have fun.” says Larissa Klazinga, AHF Regional Policy and Advocacy Manager, Southern Africa, “Many experienced a movie on the big screen for the first time and the fact that they watched Black Panther, a film depicting a hopeful and heroic vision of Africa rising led by principled leaders and young women of science, could not be more apt for the occasion.”
The children were also introduced to Ntokozo, a young woman living with HIV who gave a brief presentation on the Power of Youth and Hope for the Future. This was the lead up to Ntokozo presenting at the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam.
“We feel privileged to partner with AHF and Suncoast Cinecentre who have made this initiative possible,” says Louise Howell, Suncoast Marketing Manager, “and what better way to celebrate a real South African Superhero with the positive aspirational influence of the fictional character, Black Panther.”
