Suncoasters celebrate Africa Day
SUNCOAST volunteers recently celebrated Africa Day with pupils from Chesterville Secondary School as part of their May Community Upliftment Programme (CUP) visit.
“It was a day of fun with lots to learn about the history of the continent, many of the learners enjoyed hearing about the history, but I think the various African dances that we taught them is what they enjoyed most!” says Basil Simon, Employee Services Co-ordinator at SUNCOAST.
The learners were taught dances from around the continent such as ‘Kuduro’, which is both a dance and a form of music. The ‘Kudoro’ began in Luanda, the capital of Angola, in the late 1980’s. It is very similar in rhythm to the ‘Kizomba’, also an Angolan dance, which is characterised by a slower, more intense rhythm. ‘Kizomba’ means party in Kimbundu, an Angolan language.
Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as the African Union, which happened on 25 May 1963 when representatives from thirty African nations met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The meeting was hosted by Emperor Haile Selassie and has since become a day that is celebrated across many African countries and around the world.
SUNCOAST undertakes monthly community upliftment projects, where volunteer staff assist Chesterville based schools, organisations and projects identified by Vukukhanye.
Vukukhanye is a non-profit and public benefit organization, formed in 2001, concerned with the care and support of orphans and vulnerable children and families particularly in the community of Chesterville in Cato Manor (eThekwini).
