The second season of the sensational dance fusion show, Under Construction, was held at The Zone at SUNCOAST from Thursday 8 April to Sunday 11 April. It attracted enthusiastic support from dance lovers in Durban and those keen to witness its stunning fusion of classical ballet with more modern dance forms, from urban hip hop to krumping.
The production enjoyed three sell-out shows earlier in the week.
Under Construction II is an energetic showcase of local dance talent, featuring 23 exceptionally gifted dancers from local dance professional Taryn Makaab’s Break-Thru Dance Company, launched last year. Choreography was by Makaab and colleague Corrine de Beer.
The production saw a spellbinding sequence of routines featuring agile dancers and beat boxers performing A fusion of ballet, contemporary, jazz, krumping, tap, hip-hop, and vocal work all in one show.
The audience screamed with anticipation as SA’s number one beat-boxer, Nthuthuko "Drumkit" Majola, showcased his skills in Vocal Chords, a sequence which saw dancer Makaab matching his flurry of beat-boxing with her tap dance beats. Other favourites included Durban’s krumping crew, Genesis and break dancers from the Floor Assassins, who fused acrobatic skills with urban dance forms to great effect.
The Dolls sequence was another favourite, with dancers taking on the personalities of wind-up dolls. They performed to the popular club song ‘Rama Lama Bang Bang’ by Roisin Murphy, in a sequence inspired by the spectacular Wade Robson-choreographed piece performed on a recent season of the UK version of television show, So You Think You Can Dance?.
Due to public demand Makaab and SUNCOAST are in discussions to put on another run of the show in the near future. Watch the press for details.
