The Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust received a R1million cash injection from Durban’s Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World last month. The Trust was informed of the good news at the MTN Shootout Banquet on May 14.
Hundreds of indigent children and youth for whom education opportunities would otherwise be out of reach will now realise their dreams of receiving an education due to SUNCOAST’s generous donation.
The funding will make a substantial contribution towards the education fees of both school learners and tertiary education students.
The Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust came into being in 1995 with the intention of funding school and higher education costs of children in South Africa, with more than 200 000 recipients to date.
In addition to the provision of bursaries to hundreds of needy children in South Africa, the Trust also assists graduates secure employment, and it collaborates with employers to seek in-service and internship opportunities for its beneficiaries.
In the 2011 academic year 1200 children received financial assistance to study from the Trust, the majority of whom are registered for higher education.
Said Mike Dowsley, Executive Director of the bustling casino complex, “Foremost in SUNCOAST’s Corporate Social Investment strategy are our contributions towards education and youth upliftment projects, therefore donating funds to a trust such as this with an emphasis on youth education was an ideal opportunity for us.”
“We can only hope the funding goes a long way towards enabling positive change in the lives of deserving learners in South Africa.”
